Review
Not gonna lie, this was a tough review to write. This game has high acclaim and I’m sure the soundtrack is fitting. Composed and performed by Brooklyn-based medieval music group Alkemie, they play “over a dozen instruments (including vielles, harps, psaltery, gittern, recorders, douçaines, and percussion” and we hear much of it here, as well as beautiful and haunting vocals, as in “Manu Propria” and the chant in “Rüdeger’s Rehearsal.” I was not a fan of the score upon an initial listen, but each time through I appreciated the layers and sounds more. There’s a matter of taste and mood with medieval music, but Alkemie is skilled at it. Many of the tracks do sound similar, which makes me think the game is probably somewhat relaxing and atmospheric (a similar story to The Name of the Rose, I think). I think I may surprise myself at how often I’ll be returning to this score.
