Review
My first impression of this score was that it sounded like classic spy-jazz-type music; that impression turned out to be right in the best way possible. With lots of instruments from old school spy films, it’s a slick listen that had me feeling like I was cool as a cucumber, the picture of calm and collected, as I worked undercover, sipping on a martini at a high end cocktail party somewhere overseas. About halfway through the score the track “Into the Lair” shifts the tone, dropping the slick spy jazz and building up dramatic intensity without losing the classic espionage sound. The score features some unrecognizable sounds, so I did some digging. Come to find out composer Daniel Pemberton employed some crazy instruments to create this score, including a cimbalom – a kind of dulcimer – as well as something that is far from being an instrument except to the inventive mind of Daniel Pemberton, I suppose, and that is a Hungarian milk churn! Overall a great listen; I highly recommend.
