Review
I love a good classic monster story; but I had no clue one had business having a score this gorgeous. Abel Korzeniowski (whom we love well here for his Romeo & Juliet soundtrack) crafts beautiful melodies to pair with dark themes here. His characteristic sound is unmistakable; I had to check my music player when “There Is A Place” came on because I thought it had switched to Romeo & Juliet. Penny Dreadful, too, has the piano and cellos that sing of tragedy, darkness, and, yes, love and longing. Korzeniowski, like James Horner and Thomas Newman, is able to craft intense moments from beautiful sounds (granted, there are a few tracks later in the album with pretty intense/screechy strings). Give this a listen for its own sake, and then for all the other times you will want to hear it.
