Review
I’ve yet to see the film, but if it matches the uniqueness of Thomas Newman’s score, it’s solid. I’ve heard and loved many of Newman’s scores throughout the years (Road to Perdition, Finding Nemo, Tolkien), but this has elements I’ve never heard him use. The opening track “Hypertrophic” uses an electric guitar in a Western film sort of fashion – a fascinating artistic choice – and there is plenty of harpsichord and unique percussion instruments and electronic sounds (“Alvin Wrench” is a great example of this). A mostly delightful soundtrack, there are tense moments, and Newman’s ability to create and release tension with beautiful sounds remains unmatched (hear it in “Local Hero”). Both versions of “Til You’re Home” are good songs in their own right and deserve a listen.
