Review
The first track (“Mission Log”) sets the tone for our journey with military-style drums and some motifs that remind me of Star Trek (the Giacchino-scored film, that is). It’s clear we’re on a space mission here! The music has a feeling of lighthearted adventure with lots of strings and brass. Zurg’s theme introduces some choir that makes for a respectable villain motif, but I wasn’t blown away with the theme for Buzz Lightyear (I was just hoping for something a bit more memorable for his theme). That being said, the soundtrack is definitely a fun listen, and it would be a great accompaniment to any space adventure. I wouldn’t consider Lightyear one of my favorite Pixar soundtracks, but there is a wondrous quality to the music that I’m sure makes it a great complement to the film (which I have yet to see). This soundtrack didn’t quite go to infinity and beyond for me, but I won’t judge it too hard until I see the film itself.
