Review
One of the most interesting parts of this soundtrack is the inclusion of Kulning vocals (a musical form used to call livestock down from mountain pastures). These almost otherworldly-sounding vocals were performed by Amalie Bruun of black metal band Myrkur, and are featured on the main theme for all too short a time. A lot of the tracks are composed of lonesome-sounding strings or drums, while some, like “A King’s Speech,” feature deep and throaty vocalizations. Other tracks like “Praying for Guidance” have some enchanting higher vocals, but a lot of this soundtrack feels atmospheric, even with the occasional drums. The overall tone is gritty and dismal, fitting for the Viking lifestyle, I suppose. I would have loved to hear the Kulning vocals on more of the tracks; they have such a beautiful, haunting quality to them and are truly entrancing to listen to. All in all, this soundtrack would be decent background music if you’re writing a dark epic, but it isn’t my first choice among Viking soundtracks.
